With the elections of Heraklion Student Union, that were carried out at 20/5/18, the student elections for the academic year of 2017-18 were completed. Specifically, elections occurred in 17 Student Unions in Cyprus, Greece and Europe and the aggregate results were shaped as follow:
Proodeftiki 4046 Votes 41,34%
Protoporia 4016 votes 41,03% (-1,2%)
Anagenisi 469 votes 4,8% (-3,04%)
Agonas 168 votes 1,73% (-1,18%)
Efaefp 952 votes 9,73% (+4,04%)
Elam 136 votes 1,39%
“Proodeftiki K.F.” that means Progressive Students Movement, EDON’s Student Department has managed in this way to emerge first in the aggregate results of “POFEN” - Pancyprian Organization of Students Unions, after 5 years. It is worth noting that Proodeftiki has managed to emerge first and with an overall majority in the student unions of Higher Hotel Institute of Cyprus (HHIC), Frederic University, Rethymno , Heraklion, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Moscow. In addition, Proodeftiki has emerged first in the elections of the student union of TEPAK and Athens.
At this point the attitude of “Protoporia” - the right wing organization of the rulin party, cannot come without commenting on it, as they choose to publish their own aggregate results including last’s years results of United Kingdom’s Student Union. This year, consciously and with their choice, as they have an overall majority in that student union, no elections occurred. Hence, any inclusion of last year’s results happens with an arbitrary way and contributes to the injury of the image that as a student movement transmit towards society and in the degeneration of its procedures.
The first place of Proodeftiki K.F is not accidental. It is strongly related with the struggles and demands that EDON’s organisation has given during this academic year. The students have given vote of confidence in the organisation that stood in its side for an education with dignity, for studies and the life we worth. They ranked first in votes, the organisation that over time does not compromise but fights and struggles against government’s unpopular and anti-student measures.
At the same time Proodeftiki K.F for another year, stayed consistent and powerfully continued the anti-occupation fight. We supported with vigour our position for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, the only solution that can reunite our place and people. The students, with Proodeftiki’s emerge as first power have sent a strong message of liberation and reunification of our country while at the same time resisting against the rise of nationalism and chauvinism.
Proodeftiki K.F will continue with even more vigor in the road of struggles, demands and achievements. From the next day of elections, in every place where Cypriot students study we renew our appointment to the small and big problems of our fellow students; in universities, amphitheatres and mobilisations. Together we continue fighting for liberation, education and work! Together we will become the change!
