As EDON, we are warmly welcoming the thousands of university students and high school students demonstrating peacefully outside the Ministry of Education and Culture for their right to a full-fledged education.
Despite the threats of attendance taken and a lack of security launched yesterday by the Ministry with school administrations and parents’ unions, thousands of students were now determined to attend PSEMs demonstration. Despite the cold and the bad weather, thousands of students and responded without hesitation to the call of POFEN and PSEM. They have shown that when a movement is determined, and when is based on popular support, it has goals of struggle and proper orientation, no one can stop it. Neither the threats, nor the weather, nor the dirty campaign of disinformation and distortion of the reality that some media have chosen to do in service to the elite.
The Minister of Education and the government of Anastasiadis - DISY as a whole, understand that they can’t continue to manage the lives and the future of young people with autocracy and arrogance. To understand that, at last, especially in Education, it is necessary to make a substantive dialogue, not for impressions and communication. Democratic legitimacy certainly starts from the election once every five years, but it is depleted in contact with society and the response to its demands and needs. Let them finally consider students struggling for a human and democratic school, students expressing anxiety cry about strengthening state care to be able to study, new workers for the right to work and work with rights.
We can’t fail to see the compromise of some of the student’s bodies union, and parents. Instead of working with the well-meaning interests of students, students, and education more broadly, they use all their power to undermine the unity and struggle of PSEM and POFEN, fully serving unpopular government policy. We call on the people, in schools, universities and society more broadly, to break them down and find themselves on the side of young people who are uncompromising.
EDON will remain a constant supporter of the struggle of the organized student movement until the final victory. As the pupils rightly say, we want schools to educate all the way, not to kill! As well as the students say, education is not something to be sold, our right are won with struggles conquered!
