Central Council of EDON, Press Bureau Statement on the 8th of March – International women’s day
EDON, like every year, honours the 8th of March, the day that has been established as the International Women’s Day. The date was establish when on the 8th of March 1857 the female workers of textile industry in New York rose up and demanded as equals among equals their labour rights that up to then were downgraded in comparison to the men in the textile industry.
From that period on, the organized women’s movement came into life, aiming to designate women as an equivalent member of society. The cornerstone was planted for the improvement of quality of women’s working conditions, securing and safeguarding their working rights and for the society to better understand that the exploitation and profiteering of the capitalist system towards workers does not distinguish between gender, age or nationality.
Today, the women’s movement as well with the people as a whole, is suffering under the umbrella of austerity and memorandums. The deregulation of the working hours of stores, the reduction of welfare, the reduction of child support allowance and in generally the shrinking of the welfare state are damaging women, as well as their families that can hardly afford to live with dignity. Additionally to that we would like to highlight the fact that we witness in an international scale the fact that the position of woman today as an equivalent member of society has not been widely accepted, the recent brutal murder of the 20year old psychology student Ozgecan Aslan by a bus driver in Turkey that caused international condemnation for all those that consider violence against women as a tool of repression and authority, is just an example out of many.
EDON, since its foundation continues to stand by the side of the women’s movement. We stand against the belittlement of women as the “inferior gender” and we support women in their struggle for labour rights and equivalent place in our society. At the same time we demand from the State to assume its responsibilities against women’s trafficking, domestic violence and on the law for abortion as a woman’s right.
We remind every woman that she deserves and offers much more than the things that the Media and the fake female industry are promoting as women’s role model, because we very well know that: “great social revolutions are impossible without the feminine ferment”. For this reason, every woman must continue her own struggle together with her class for a better tomorrow.
