The mass mobilizations taking place in Sri Lanka in the last months against the policies of impoverishment of the people and the authoritarianism of the regime are facing repression and state violence.
Yesterday, 22 August, after the end of a peaceful protest, the Slave Island police unprovokedly attacked the demonstrators, using the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Emergency Regulations by the Ranil - Rajapaksa government, arresting several students and trade unionists. Among those arrested, is comrade Rangana Lakmal Dewapriya, National Organizer of the Socialist Students' Union.
As EDON, we once again express our full solidarity with the struggling people of Sri Lanka. We join our voice with the thousands of young militants in the country and demand the immediate release of the arrested comrades and an end to the repression.
