The NATO Summit was held between 4 and 5 September 2014 in Wales and took place during a period characterised by the intensification of inter-imperialist contradictions for the re-division of the globe.
The Summit focused on five important themes. The special subject of the Summit was the crisis in Ukraine and NATO’s relations with Russia. Other themes that were discussed during the Summit were the situation in Afghanistan and the country’s future, the «new threats» and the strengthening of the Member State’s armed forces.
Ukraine..... NATO’s active and trusted ally
Due to the crisis in Ukraine and the fact that the governance of the country was delivered into the hands of the extreme right, NATO member states found fertile ground to promote their vital interests, a development which they sought. Because of these developments, NATO managed to establish its permanent presence in Ukraine as well as in the surrounding area. This situation creates, in other conditions of course, a dangerous Cold War climate for the people of the region.
Increase of military expenses
Beyond the political influence of NATO, the issue of military empowerment was at the forefront. NATO member states agreed to send military equipment to the region, to implement the plans for the creation of a rapid reaction force based in the Baltic Sea and to increase their military expenses.
More visible presence in the Middle East
The declared termination of the mission of the Western troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, neither marks the end of NATO’s missions in the country nor alters NATO’s strategic goal to create the "Greater Middle East". The Summit approved a «readiness action plan» in order to enhance NATO’s responsiveness and flexibility to combat future «threats» and «challenges» and welcomed the USA military action against the Islamists in Iraq.
«Safeguarding of Peace and Stability»
According to the organisers, the Summit processes were successful in terms of "ensuring peace and stability." Not of course regarding peace and stability between the peoples of the world, but 'peace' and 'stability' between the capitalists who want to preserve their profits and keep war and destruction for the people.
NATO in Cyprus...
NATO is at our country’s doorstep as well. In a country where the only way NATO could enter was through military action, it currently enters with a ‘suit and a tie’. This happens due to President Anastasiades’ pledges that Cyprus will join NATO and its branch, the Partnership for Peace.
